Exterior"The Cottage" is approached by a lazy little lane and is surrounded by country gardens resplendent with birds, butterflies and bumblebees. An enthusiastic gardener, Lee has filled the area around the house with vividly colored flowers, herbs and foliage plants - many that could well have grown here when the house was new in 1910. Plants include basils, buddleia, lambs ears, lantanas, petunia, plumbago, rosemary, salvias, vines and others too numerous to name. Trees include crape myrtles, figs, oaks, persimmons, and native junipers. Readily available limestone rocks define most flower beds and walks. A swing, seating area, garden art and whimsies add to your enjoyment of the gardens.
"The Arbor", focal point of the gardens, is a covered seating area with a fireplace and is the perfect spot for outdoor entertainment of small groups. The covered area seats thirty very comfortably; a small kitchen and restrooms provide complete convenience. Just for fun there is an outdoor cold water shower attached to one of the restrooms.
"The Cottage" and "The Arbor" afford a secluded and charming hideaway in an atmosphere where you will feel as though you were experiencing a part of Texas' past. In 1998, "The Cottage" and "The Arbor" were featured in "Tours of Distinction", the annual home tour sponsored by the Heritage Association of San Marcos and held the first weekend in May. See Special Occasions for more information about "The Arbor".
